THE STORY
Story has it that a young Stan Bitters was walking the hallways of Otis College when he chanced upon Peter Voulkos working alone in his studio. He was intrigued by Voulkos’ approach to clay—devil-may-care, unfettered, and visceral. Stan came from a context of ceramics as tea cups and saucers meant to be placed on top of doilies. Soon enough, he introduced himself and started a conversation which can be best described as life-changing. One of things he asked Voulkos was, “How do you throw a ball?”
